Mr Bellamy, the favourite comedian of the Norwich Company, was engaged by the managers of Covent Garden Theatre at what was described as “a liberal salary”. The London Press however criticised his “provincial twang” and described his performance of the part of Polonius in Shakespeare’s Hamlet as “somewhat outlandish”.
