It took until November 7 for news of the battle of Trafalgar to reach the city of Norwich. It was fought off the Spanish coast on October 21, and resulted in a comprehensive British victory over the French and Spanish fleets, but local hero Admiral Horatio Nelson was killed aboard HMS Victory.

“The bells were rung and fired throughout the day, but all the joy that would have arisen from the victory was wholly absorbed in sorrow and regret for the death of the Hero of the Nile and Trafalgar.”
